What is the TAR.GZ file format?

TAR.GZ is a compressed archive. The file extension is a combination of TAR (an uncompressed collection of files known as “a tarball”) and GZIP (a compression utility developed for Linux systems that makes files smaller).

TGZ and TAR.GZ are essentially the same type of file. Both refer to an archive created via GZIP, with .tgz being shorthand for tar.gz. The presence of “GZ” points to the use of the compression program in both cases.
